After last year’s lovely experience LRC members were very enthusiastic to sign up again for the Gozo Half Marathon and 8 mile races that took place on Sunday 24th April 2016. This was a chance to take part in a well organised and very scenic race on ‘home away from home’ sister island Gozo while enjoying some relaxed time together with fellow club members. Needless to say anticipation level for the weekend gained momentum as the event approached and very excited teams of ladies headed to the Cirkewwa ferries.
After some very necessary – and conveniently enjoyable carb loading over a dinner and erhm.. shows….which consisted of truly spectacular fireworks festival, and not so spectacular parking of car under a tree that resulted in excess guano cover, we were all set for running!
Race day morning dawned with scattered clouds and breeze which proved actually a blessing, keeping the temperatures down on manageable level on those long stretches of sunny roads through the fields and villages. We got together well in time for warming up and group photos to capture the moment.
Then it was time to start and put one foot in front of another!
Gozo race is described as hilly and tough and it didn’t disappoint – it was a battle between punishing the hills or letting them punish us but we did persevere and climbed it to the finish! Fastest LRC member of doing so was Francesca Arrigo coming in 2nd overall of all women. It’s probably fair to say that each and every one of us thought it demanding but for that all the more willing to come back next year to try it out again.
Alexandra Borg and Hannah Williams braved the Half Marathon while the rest of us took part in the 8 mile version. After the race it was time to sit down for a lovely lunch and enjoy the post race relaxation in great company with friends and supporting families.
All good things come to an end and it was time to head back to Malta, enriched with a fantastic experience of the race and such enjoyable time spent together – with a definite promise we will return next year to recapture the Gozo racing atmosphere and having tremendous fun while we run!
Ps. Group photos are really difficult to take….someone is always bound to be missing…so you keep on adding… 😀
